MISSION

Theatre NorthWest is a regional professional theatre in a city of 84,000 people serving as a hub to the entire Northern region. We are an established organization with a history spanning 30 years. TNW is a member of PACT and a signatory to the CTA, it is an F house that primarily produces its own work. TNW’s mission and mandate is to focus on contemporary Canadian theatre, to make quality professional theatre accessible to the people who live, work, and play in Prince George and region.

This organization and this document contain the artistic expression of a non-hierarchical cohort of 3 Artistic Associates working collaboratively to describe and deliver a vision for Theatre NorthWest. We, the artistic leadership team, all live and work in Prince George and bring a diversity of education and experience. We understand the importance of the history of the organization, and how this history impacts the patrons, and the direction we plan to take the theatre.

Through examination of that history, we have identified several priorities for the coming years beginning with a focus on creating content that excites our patrons. We are committed to providing high caliber experiences that offer variety and novelty to our community. We will continue TNW’s legacy of working to maintain a reputation in the industry as a fun, safe and professional place to work. We want to build lasting relationships with other theatres and foster an environment where all artists collaborate openly and learn from one another.

We are proud to have a reputation for being leaders in inclusivity and accessible policy and practices. This work remains at the core of what we do.

Theatre Northwest is committed to investing in the artists who live in our region.

We recognize that being an artist living in Prince George is complex and often requires significant sacrifice. Our local colleagues deserve our support, and we hope that engaging our local artists to create where they live will help them flourish, develop new skills and contribute to a thriving arts ecosystem in Prince George. Our long-term goal is to see them represent us at theatres around the country.

We recognize that like all settler organizations in Canada we have anti-racist and decolonizing work to do. Theatre NorthWest will continue to strive to decolonize our approach to creating theatre by recognizing, accepting, and critically reviewing our colonial history. In reflecting on our Mission and Mandate, which centers on access to professional theatre, and is still relevant after 30 years, we want to use our privilege and position to amplify and elevate the diversity of voices in our community through our art, our artists, our productions and our outreach.

Theatre NorthWest is a regional theatre dedicated to bringing our audience a wide range of plays drawn from the contemporary Canadian and International repertoire. Actors and other theatre professionals are contracted for each production from across Canada to work with our resident staff in order to bring together a four-play season which runs from September to May.
To maintain and operate a professional theatre company in Prince George, BC thereby providing the citizens of North Central British Columbia:
Theatre of high caliber, which reaches a broad cross-section of the community through varied and stimulating programming that strives to inspire, invigorate, educate, and entertain by reflecting and illuminating the concerns and aspirations of both the community and our world today.
Promotion of interest in – and development of – North Central BC and Canadian theatre by such means as: the presentation of plays and other performances, audience education, and
instruction in and demonstration of the arts of the theatre.
AND ABOVE ALL: ACCESS for those in this Northern region to the pleasures and
benefits of professional theatre commonly enjoyed by Canadians in our country’s larger centers.

Theatre NorthWest is an active member of The Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT), engages artists under both the Canadian Actors Equity Association (CAEA) CTA Agreement and the Associated Designers of Canada (ADC) and receives generous funding from The Canada Council for the Arts, The B.C Arts Council, and the City of Prince George
