WORKSHOP 1: FOR THE LOVE OF TEXT!

In this first workshop of our summer series, participants will work a monologue from William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” in a group setting. We will begin by analyzing the text, unpacking the speech, and discussing how we perceive this character based on the text. The group will work on breaking down the monologue into beats and experimenting with different tactics for delivering the text. This workshop is designed to accommodate beginners as well as more experienced performers. By examining this text, participants will gain transferable skills to help them with audition pieces as well as prepare them for the other workshops in our summer series. This workshop will also touch on character development and will illustrate how many diverse interpretations can be created from a single piece of text.

The workshop will take place Saturday, July 23rd from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Theatre NorthWest and will be run by Artistic Associate Melissa Glover. A copy of the monologue will be provided along with pencils.

WORKSHOP 2: IT’S ALL IN THE PRESENTATION!

This workshop will build off the skills of text analysis from the first workshop but is fully self contained. Registration is open to all members of the community. Participants will be given a monologue that is specific to their demographic to add to their repertoire, or will be welcome to bring a monologue of their choosing. They will receive personalized monologue coaching and the opportunity to use what they learn in a mock audition setting. Participants will be asked to research their piece and ideally to memorize it in advance however, there will also be an opportunity to explore a new piece during the session and perform it as a reading for those who may prefer that option.

This opportunity is for local actors with varying levels of experience who are interested in expanding their audition toolkit, gaining usable advice from accomplished professionals in the field, and building confidence and professionalism in their auditions. This second workshop in the summer series will take place on August 6th from 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. and will be led by Theatre NorthWest Artistic Associate Anna Russell.

WORKSHOP 3: PUTTING IT TOGETHER!

The final workshop in the summer series will demonstrate a variety of acting techniques and approaches to rehearsing scenes with a partner or an ensemble. How do you find a new way to play a scene when something just isn’t working right? What can you find out about your character by adding an additional challenge to the scene or creating circumstances that show you new perspectives on your story? Participants will be given a scene to work through with a partner or in a small group, together the group will use text and character analysis to explore the scene more deeply. Attendance of previous workshops is recommended but not required. This workshop will take place from 1:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. on August 27th and will be led by Theatre NorthWest Artistic Associate Bradley Charles and Artist in Residence Michelle Cyr.
